Biohazard 3: Last Escape/ Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Occurring at around the same time as the events of Biohazard 2, this instalment involves deeper exploration of Racoon and only a fleeting visit to the RPD station. Another returning feature is favourite Jill Valentine, playable character from the first game. She has resigned from her post at the Special Tactics and Rescue Service in a bid to flee the city before things really get worse.

Read on:

It becomes very apparent that she decided to leave in the nick of time, as the streets are suddenly crawling with zombies. While there are certainly many familiar elements of gameplay, aspects of it have taken a new direction. A fresh enemy is Nemesis, a huge monster deployed by Umbrella to silence S.T.A.R.S. members. He seems impossible to defeat, and can only be temporarily evaded until he somehow tracks you down again. Presented with his encounters are on-screen options about which action to take. Each of your choices will affect the ending of the game, as well as the immediate aftermath, and although it can be hard to decide, selecting one of them is better than selecting neither of them.

In order to escape successfully Jill must team-up with surviving members of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service, some of whom are definitely up to no good.

Depending on which difficulty level you choose, you may be presented with quite a lot of extra weapons at the start of the game. A new and interesting gameplay dynamic is the ability to make your own ammunition by mixing gunpowder. You may not use it very much, but it certainly is handy depending on which kind of gun is your most equipped.

As usual, there is quite a bit of puzzle-solving and some of it gets mathematically complicated.

You won't be surprised to read that, as is typical of Resident Evil games, the soundtrack is breathtakingly brilliant and evokes so much nostalgia that you'll barely be able to function.

A thoroughly recommended game.
